Advanced Placement  English Literary Focus 40S (ELF40S)
English Literature and Composition 42S (EAP42S)

Course Description

Note:  Students receive two high school credits for completion of this course.

Offered as a full year course at GVC, this course selection combines ELF40S and EAP42S.  This combination of courses is designed for students who wish to challenge themselves in the world of English literature and is comparable to a first-year university course.

The ELA40S credit satisfies the requirements of Manitoba’s English Literary Focus curriculum, including the completion of the Provincial English Standards Exam.  The Literary Focus emphasizes the aesthetic uses of language: language that enlightens, fosters understanding and empathy, reflects culture, expresses feelings and experience, and brings enjoyment.  The texts students explore and compose include a variety of informal and formal discourse, from free-writing, conversations, journals, and improvised drama to scripts, essays, poetry, short stories, novels, and videos.

The EAP42S credit is the Advanced Placement course in English Literature and Composition: an international program which allows students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. This course will engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the way writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism and tone. Writing assignments will focus on effective use of language and on the organization of ideas in a coherent and persuasive way. This intensive course is well suited to students who enjoy a challenge and who are prepared to put in regular homework hours.

Students enrolled in the AP English program at GVC may receive both high school and university credit for their studies in the AP English program. Students who meet the course requirements will receive two high school credits, regardless of the results of the AP exam.
