Jazz Band 40S (JBD40S)
Course Description
Our grade 9 through 12 non-auditioned jazz band is called Phthalo. It gives students the opportunity to study the history of jazz, listen to jazz, play jazz and to explore the areas of improvisation and jazz theory. This group performs frequently at a variety of functions. Group members must be available to perform at the Christmas & Spring Concerts and the Brandon Jazz Festival.
*Note: Students are expected to contribute towards the cost of the trip to the Brandon Jazz Festival in March. Significant fundraising is available to each student to help defray or even eliminate tour costs. Financial assistance may be available upon request.

Units Covered
- Specific topics are taught through playing and performing in class. Topics addressed include an understanding of jazz articulations, style, jazz theory, jazz history, and improvisation. Students will leave with an understanding of how their part fits within the larger ensemble and the value of cross-ensemble listening skills.
